Things put on hold…indefinitely?

As has already been reported elsewhere, it would appear that Bastion Studios have ceased trading as of Monday 17th January.

The official announcement from Bastion:

Hello everyone,

Right after the holidays, a series of event led us to the conclusion that a shutdown of operations, at least a temporary one, was needed. While sales are on the rise, communities are growing and our distribution network is improving everyday, it became apparent that we couldn’t continue with our current financial structure. The staff working at Bastion, myself included, has been let go, but it remains our collective aim to work together again once more on Ex illis with a new financial partner. Efforts are being made on that front, but as you can imagine, we are not in a position where we can freely discuss these things yet.

Despite this news, the servers will continue to stay up for the time being. This, and the fate of the Demon Horde box set, is of course intimately related to the arrival of new financial partners. While the future as a company is still uncertain, we have pledged to the player community that the servers would stay up and running and we intend to keep this promise.

This has been an emotional time for all of us at Bastion. We have been working hard over the last three years to create a game we are truly proud of, working hard in the past few months to avoid this situation, and now that it became unavoidable, we are still working hard to set it straight. You are welcome to write us at contactus@bastionstudio.com, but I apologize in advance if we do not have the time to answer to them individually.

Friedrich

Obviously, this throws a somewhat large spanner into the works of what I had planned for this year for this website and podcast, so everything here will be put on hold until the future of the Ex Illis game becomes clear.

I do not think that any sort of comment or speculation on the “how’s” and “why’s”of this situation is useful at the moment – I would much rather wait and see what Bastion have to say about the situation.

Personally, I’m gutted by the news. Ex Illis was the best game that I’d come across for some time – it ticked all the right boxes for what I wanted out of a miniature gaming system at this time.

I just want to wish the guys at Bastion all the very best – this must be a very difficult time for them – and I wish them all well in the future.

Details of new Demonic troops

Bastion have just announced the forthcoming release of their next troops for Ex-Illis

Legionari & Berserkr

It has to be said that initial comments on the Ex Illis forums regarding these models have been mixed.

My own thoughts? Well, they aren’t the best looking models in the world, based on the box art, but I’d rather see the completed sprues ‘in the flesh’ before I think of pronouncing any final judgement…

A Spanner in the works…

It’s never a great thing to start off the new year with some negative news, but I’m afraid I don’t have much choice.

It looks as if the launch of the BTBE Podcast is going to be delayed until the start of February.

This follows a meeting yesterday with my boss at work, in which I was informed that I will be working away from home for the next 3-4 weeks…great for solo podcasting, but unless the hotel carries free Wi-Fi in the rooms, not so great for recording shows using Skype.

So I’m afraid that under the circumstances, a delay to the launch of BTBE is inevitable.

…On the bright side, I may be able to get lots of painting done! (I hope!)

I’ll give you more updated news on the podcast as soon as I get it.

Resale of miniatures

Since I’ve produced the review of Ex Illis in Episode 70 of the Meeples & Miniatures podcast, there have been several questions about the miniatures for the game. One of the questions that has come up a few times is about the re-sale of miniatures, should you wish to, and the perceived problems with that process.

Due to a couple of comments made on TMP regarding this, lets just add further clarification. In Ex Illis, you need to register miniatures with the game software in order to play the game. This means that the figures are usable by that player. But what if that player then sells the miniatures? How does the new owner of the miniatures get them transferred in the game software to his account when registration keys only work once?

I’ve had the following email from Alexandre Coissard, who is the Marketing Co-ordinator of Bastion Inc.

“Just to clear things up, minis are totally resalable, we didn’t put together an official module for transactions, but our programmer can totally reassign minis from one account to another. We treat those transfers case by case; fortunately there are not a lot of Ex illis players who wish to part with their figures.

Thanks.
Cheers,

Alexandre Coissard

Economic System – new menu page

Bastion Inc. are getting close to releasing an update for the Ex Illis website – the Economic system.

These changes have been undergoing beta testing by members of the Bleeding Edge Knights program, but comments made in the last few days seem to indicate that they are almost ready for release.

The changes add another layer of depth and complexity to the online army management system that is currently in place – each player has an estate to manage, with various areas in that estate enabling the player to add new items and skills to his units – as long as they have the correct resources available.

A preview of what a players estate will look like has been posted on the Ex illis wiki, but you can see it below.

This looks to be an exciting addition to the online management tools for your forces.
